It has been an important symbol of international cooperation following the “space race” rivalry of the Cold War, and the first truly long-term space habitat. The ISS, however, is slated to retire at the end of the decade, after nearly 30 years in orbit. The first module of the Chinese station Tiangong was launched in April 2021, and is intermittently occupied by three crew. The International Space Station (ISS) has been occupied since November 2000 with a typical population of seven crew members. There are currently two occupied space stations in low Earth orbit (less than 2,000km above Earth’s surface), both belonging to space agencies. Many believe this is what it will take to get humans to Mars and beyond. They’re part of what has been called “ Space 4.0”, where space technology is driven by commercial opportunities. These proposals are the first attempts to create places for humans to live and work in space outside the framework of government space agencies. NASA has announced three commercial space station proposals for development, joining an earlier proposal by Axiom Space. To learn more about the HDEV experiment, visit here.A new era of space stations is about to kick off. Between camera switches, a gray and then black color slate will briefly appear. While the experiment is operational, views will typically sequence through the different cameras. This experiment includes several commercial HD video cameras aimed at the Earth which are enclosed in a pressurized and temperature controlled housing. It is mounted on the External Payload Facility of the European Space Agency’s Columbus module. The High Definition Earth Viewing (HDEV) experiment aboard the ISS was activated April 30, 2014. Nominal video will resume once the team has finished their scheduled event. This is handled by the HDEV team, and is only scheduled on a temporary basis. Please note: The HDEV cycling of the cameras will sometimes be halted, causing the video to only show select camera feeds.
